Theories

6. There is often intertextual reference

Many artists use an image you will identify automatically, such as Chris brown’s ‘Turn up the music’ which has a similar dance move to Michael Jacksons ‘Smooth Criminal’.

By doing this it attracts a wider audience as you it may appeal to Michael Jackson fans.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

Richard Dyer claims that there are

two types of artists, a ‘pop performer’

who are people that can sing or rap

and a ‘Pop star’ who are constructed, artificial images as they will uphold an image.

A recent example is Justin Biebers bang (hair style) which is automatically his as he used his hair style as a way of differentiating himself from other stars in the industry and has been successful.

He states that the reason for the name ‘Pop star’ is because the press and magazines display things in their personal lives such as love affairs which over take the music. ‘A great Star is one who can change with the times to fit with the new fashion and style.’
