Theories

Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin has six points which he believes is the overview of music videos;

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

Within certain styles and actions are expected of them because of the genre such as dance movements with a boy band, such as backstreet boys. These types of bands mainly appealed to teenagers as they tend to be young and hip which gives them a part in being a role model for their audience. Another example is rock bands tend to have music videos with the band on stage such as KISS and Linkin Park. By having bands perform on stage it gives viewers a small taste of reality within the music video.

2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals

Goodwin discovered that many music videos linked with the lyrics on the music video such as R.Kelly&Usher – Same girl.

The lyrics at these scene is; “Man I really can’t believe, the same girl…”

3. Tone and atmosphere – visuals reflect on music video

Within music videos the speed of a certain shot will be increased if the beat of the song has increased.
