How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For any promoter, it is imperative that there is a sense of continuity in the promotional products constructed so that the audience can see the signature brand of the artist. The task I was given is one task that requires excellent understanding of relationship between the audience and genre conventions in order to be successful in the promotion of the artist. With this in mind, I started work on my production pieces.

All my products show elements on continuity especially with typography, the colour blue is used consistently to clearly portray the link between each product. I all my products I use elements of neutral/natural colours.

In my music video I use neutral colours for some background scenes. This allows my artist to look both trendy and innocent as nature is associated with youth. This has been used in real products such as Taylor Swift ‘Love story’ music video which is similar to my music video synopsis about young love. The natural scenery exaggerates on the element of youth in the music videos.

Maribelle’s track ‘I got you’ belongs to the genre of Pop music and in order to adhere to the genre conventions and suggest the genre, I made sure that my artist was stylishly depicted with nice clothes and accessories. The emphasis on make-up and the jewellery she wore added to that idea of glamour that I wanted to paint. My music video uses a lot of close ups of her lips and eye make-up and nails to show her femininity and style as well as the variety of costumes she is portrayed wearing. The platform shoes, also very in fashion is emphasized in the walking scenes as well as the off the shoulder dress.

I have carried out the usage of neutral colours on to my Digi-pack. By doing this I continue the innocent image maintain a type of pure characteristic for my artist. The typography is different shade of blues which shows a link between my Digi-pack and poster. Reason for this colour is because the artists’ nails are light blue so it does not have too many different colours as it would take away the focus of the artists name, song title and front cover.

In the music video, Mirabelle is portrayed as this fresh and sophisticated talent, so for that reason stereotypes were challenged, so that she can stand out. In the same way, the video also focusses on the innocence of her love rather than cleavage or skin show. The best way to combine the sexiness and the simplicity was reflected in the soft tone of turquoise. This equally influenced my decision to use a round and italicized found that referred to her feminine and sexy style. The music video portrays the lovers as cute and inoffensive and this idea is carried on I inside back cover where the CD is placed is white with a splash of turquoise paint. The writing all along the CD refers back to the lyrics – ‘I got you’. The same fonts used on the front cover of the CD (State which one) has been used on the video and the magazine advert so that the audience can easily identify her brand.

Her signature selling point is her blue nails so by using image a blue heart it creates a link and also emphasises that she is a young and a girl in love. The heart on the CD adds to the stylish effect, showing continuity though-out the whole Digi-pack.

I used the same font for the word ‘I Got You’ for my CD and Poster to allow consumers to familiarise with the products. The fancy font adds more style to the simplistic CD cover and neutralises the modish and power of the poster.

Front cover of CD

The inside of my Digi-pack is very simple with the colour pale blue used as it defuses audience attention away from important information such as the CD itself. Other artists’ have used this technique such as female singer Ailee for her ‘Invitation’ album, who uses a light brown inside page and a purple CD so that the main focus is on the CD.

The simplicity of the inside front cover also carries on this idea of fresh talent and her youth. The turquoise tint used to fade the close up shot of Mirabelle creates interest for the audience. The faded effect works well as it reminds the audience of the light leaks used as well as the cross dissolve and fades used in the video. However, I added a sleek border around the picture of the inside front cover of the digipak to remind the audience that she is sophisticated. This idea can be seen through the way she sings to the camera and her allure when she walks to the boyfriend in the music video.

I used borders for the back of my CD and the left side of the inside of my Digi-pack. I used this to create structure; I used a thin border line to show elements of sophistication.

As the representation of my character is about someone who is confident with herself, stylish and sexy, I made sure that I continued this idea in my print productions.  In the digipak front cover, a close up shot of Mirabelle looking straight at the camera has been used to demonstrate that confidence and style that she possesses. The curls make up and accessories extend on the representation of her feminine self. The painted lips adds to the sexiness of her character. For the back cover, I chose a picture which was deliberately cropped to only show her bare shoulders and turquoise finger nails which is a recurring colour scheme across all three products. The bare shoulder links back to the prom dress she wears in the video while at the same time it emphasizes this vixen look. The nails are significant motifs in the print products as I wanted to establish a close link among all three tasks. The choice of turquoise may sound very pacific and unconventional of pop style but I chose this colour as it emphasized her sleek beauty which would hopefully stand out in the print products.

I used the same font for the word ‘I Got You’ for my CD and Poster to allow consumers to familiarise with the products. The fancy font adds more style to the simplistic CD cover and neutralises the modish and power of the poster.

I wanted to step away from the innocent image so that my artist and products could attract a wider audience. I used a more hip and chic style for my poster. By doing this it allows me to work with the trends of my target audience; and with my artists audience the ‘Tumblr’ style is extremely popular. This is seen in other artists work as it allows it to attract various viewers. In the images below it shows how artist can use two styles but still have some comparisons between two products. I did this by using the same typography to link between two products.

The magazine advert equally has a close link with the other two productions. The fact that she is seen as versatile in fashion, i.e. wearing both casual and smart clothes, the combination is carefully captured in the photo I chose for my advertisement page. The cleavage shows her sexiness and the cap and the jacket her casual style. The emphasis on the make-up and the turquoise nails further emphasizes on her fashion statement. This picture with her hand above her head shows her confidence as seen in the video at the concert scene or in the photo booth where she seems to be in control of the situation. Once more the typography is standardized across all three tasks to enforce her brand.

I used the ‘itunes’ and ‘HMV’ logos on the bottom on my poster and back cover of CD as they are     two companies that are popular and are automatically associated with music.

Conclusively, all three tasks (the main and the two ancillary tasks) work well together as her image and style as well as the genre all synchronize to create a sense of continuity that promoters looks for in order to market an artist in the tough competition that exists in the industry.
